Chemstar WATER’s CHEMSTAR 404VP Biodegradable Corrosion Inhibiting Powder
Corrosion Inhibiting Powder for Carbon Steel, Aluminum & Other Ferrous Metals (Patent Pending)
CHEMSTAR 404VP is a water-soluble Vapor Phase Corrosion Inhibitor (VPCI) powder engineered to provide wet or dry protection for ferrous metals and aluminum. Its innovative formula (Patent Pending) creates a protective vapor-phase barrier that safeguards even hard-to-reach internal surfaces. For applications requiring silica, CHEMSTAR 404VPS is also available.

- Additive in shot-blasting media or wet blasting solutions
- Treatment for standing water
Metals Protected
- Carbon steel
- Stainless steel
- Aluminum
- Other ferrous alloys
Advantages
- Vapor-phase inhibiting action – Forms a protective molecular layer on both visible and hidden surfaces, preventing corrosion in inaccessible or recessed areas.
- Self-replenishing – If disturbed by moisture or when an enclosure is opened, the protective layer reforms via continuous vapor redeposition.
- Non-disruptive – Typically requires no removal before normal processing; if removal is necessary, a simple water rinse or air blow-off will suffice.
- Low impact on alkalinity – Does not raise pH significantly in systems where pH balance is critical.
- Cost-effective coverage – Delivers comprehensive protection for large or complex systems at an economical dosage.
Features
- Cefas-Accepted Offshore Chemical – Registered under OCNS number 25717 for use up to 5,000 ppm.
- Three-phase protection (liquid, vapor, and interface) – Protects metal surfaces below and above the waterline.
- Monomolecular layer – Forms a thin, robust film that shields metal surfaces for up to 24 months.
- No nitrites, phosphates, or heavy metals – Minimizes environmental and handling risks.
Application Methods
Dry Powder Application: Dust, fog, or sprinkle CHEMSTAR 404VP/404VPS directly into enclosed spaces (e.g., piping, tanks, vessels). Large-scale fogging can be performed using a low-pressure air hose and sandblasting cup.
Aqueous Application: Dissolve CHEMSTAR 404VP in water and apply via spray, flush, or immersion. After application, seal or close off the cavity or void to maintain an optimal protective environment.
Dosage
- Dry Application: Under typical conditions, use 0.3–0.5 oz (8.5–14 g) per 1 ft³ (28 L) of enclosed space, equivalent to 300–500 g/m³. Increase dosage for harsher environments.
- Aqueous Application: Consult your Chemstar WATER representative for specific recommendations based on your operating conditions, water chemistry, and project requirements.
Removal
- Easy Removal (Dry Form): Simply blow out the powder using a low-pressure air gun or rinse with water.
- Minimal Residue (Aqueous Form): Often, no removal is needed after aqueous application. If necessary, a quick water rinse will remove any residual inhibitor.
Packaging & Storage
Available in 5 lb (2.3 kg), 50 lb (23 kg), or 100 lb (45 kg) moisture-barrier bags, packed in fiber-lined drums. Also offered in convenient EcoPouch® formats. Store in a sealed container in a dry warehouse, away from direct sunlight. Recommended storage temperatures should not exceed 150°F (65°C). Under optimal conditions, shelf life is up to 24 months.
Environmental & Toxicological Testing
- Biodegradable – Demonstrates 100% biodegradability in marine environments (OECD 306, BOD 28 Marine test).
- Low Toxicity – Oral LD50 of 5,000 mg/kg in rats.
- No Bioaccumulation – No significant potential for bioaccumulation (OECD Guideline 117).
All testing performed according to Oslo-Paris Commission protocols by Nortech A.S. (Norway).
